Chip Arnold is a well-liked football coach at a small liberal arts college, but his personal life is in a bit of a rut. He goes out drinking with his colleagues, gets along well with his players, and dates all the prettiest women in town - he has the life most straight men dream of. But lately none of the women he dates seem to be igniting any passion in him. Then he meets the new school chaplain, Foster Lewis.
Romantic attraction to another man is new and terrifying, and Chip just can't put his finger on why he's drawn to Foster, but it's stronger than anything he's felt for anyone in his life. Never one to back down from a challenge, Chip decides to go for it. But love is never simple, and sometimes it's a downright mess!

What an odd novel this is. Over the top and unbelievable, it still proved to be a VERY enjoyable and funny tale.Chip is the football coach of a small southern university. The epitome of wholesome small-town goodness and heterosexual virility, he finds himself head over heals in love with the new chaplain, Foster. Two of Chip's players, Jason and Brad, are best buds and do everything together. To their frat bothers (and everyone who sees them), they're practically married even though the relationship is just this side of sexual. But college is a time for growth, and they eventually start contemplating their true feelings for each other.
The story is unapologetically optimistic and romantic, sailing fully clear of the waters of believability into fantasy. The most homophobic action in the entire book is a sly comment by a very conservative woman, and in this world, gays are much more accepted than one could ever believe. For example, the story opens with Chip and Lenny drinking. Chip is the football coach, Lenny his assistant. Chip is boy-next-door handsome and built like a brick outhouse. He dates Lynn, a professor at the uni, but he's not fulfilled. He thinks of settling down, but the relationship lacks true passion. Still, he thinks he may just be too virile for one woman. Even his name, "Chip", is wholesome and virile and All-American. Lenny is a bit sleazy, unattractive, dresses sloppily, and is very much a womanizer. Neither has any problem discussing whether they'd fare well in a gay lifestyle. Hardly conversation you'd expect from womanizing jocks. Yet they engage in it, and it's funny. Deliciously funny.
And that's the true charm of the book. It's simply a very witty funny novel. There's a ton of witty dialog and funny circumstances and lovable characters, and you smile and laugh your way through the book. The college antics of Jason and Brad, Chip openly fawning over Foster every chance he gets (regardless of who's nearby), aggressive vindictive squirrels with deadly aim of an acorn, the woman's track coach and her propensity to run down people in her golf cart... it all is totally mindless and funny. I grinned so much while reading this, I couldn't put it down.

Simple Men (Audible Audio Edition) Eric Arvin Charlie David Dreamspinner Press Books Reviews
After reading the other reviews of this book, I decided to give it a try - and I'm glad I did. It's warm and witty, and the characters are for the most part believable and well presented. Sure, it's overly optimistic - I mean how many college football coaches have you known who not only date the college chaplain but have the courage to do it so openly as Chip? But I still enjoyed it and found it hard to put down, finishing it in only a couple of days.
One of the things I liked about it was that sex is secondary to romance and relationships in this book, which is a welcome change from the typical gay novel. Where some books will gloss over the romance and describe the sex in nauseating, boring detail, this book wants to (and succeeds at) pulling your heartstrings and glosses over the sex with a statement as simple and complete as "They made love."
I could picture the characters and the settings very easily in my mind because Arvin describes them so well. In fact, I'd like to see a movie made of this story. I was also captivated by some of his creative word pictures, such as "You try to find things to keep the fragile smile on your face from dripping off like a watercolor." That's only one example of many wonderful expressions in this book that caught my eye.
No, it won't sail to the top of the New York Times best seller list, but gay romantics who appreciate excellent character development and sparkling, creative dialogue will appreciate this little gem of a book. I want to read more of Eric Arvin's work now.
This is a wonderful take on romance in college, with interleaving stories of love, humor with a healthy dose of reality put together by a master storyteller. Two stories, one common theme, lasting love. I loved the way Mr. Arvin tells this refreshingly different story of romance on campus. The character interaction was beautifully played and made for a really enjoyable read. After all, who can be mad with a muffin!
It's love at first sight when ladies man Chip Arnold falls for the college chaplain, Foster Lewis. Since Chip Arnold had never had a gay thought in his life and just instantly turned gay, I had to roll my eyes at this premise. However, I kept reading and was richly rewarded with a charming love story with well developed characters. In addition to the romantic story between Chip and Foster we also have the college boy antics of Jason and Brad, which is just as enjoyable. There is also witty dialogue interspersed throughout the book, particulary with wise cracking women's track coach, Katie Hammond. I haven't seen this kind of witty dialogue since I read SIGNIFICANT OTHERS by Armistead Maupin.
The cover art is hot yet the sex in the book is low key and merely mentioned - not described in excessive detail. I particularly liked that about this book since too much sex can ruin a book for me. I definitely plan to read more by this author!
